A two-year old girl has been raped at Zingqayi Village in Butterworth.

Eastern Cape police said Friday the rape took place on Christmas Day.

'The child went missing after playing with a one-year-old boy,' Captain Jackson Manatha was quoted by Sapa as saying.

'Her cries were then heard by her next-door neighbour, who went into the house next door to check what was happening. When she opened the door she saw a 22-year-old man zipping up his trousers. The man then ran away when he saw the neighbour.'

Manatha said he was not sure if the man was related to the child. The girl was in a stable condition.

Elsewhere in the country, a 17-year-old girl was gang raped at a party at Xilinxa Village also on Christmas day.

'It is alleged that seven suspects entered through a window, and found the girl in a room in the house the party was at.'

'They then gang raped her and ran away. Her parents then found her in the room,' Manatha told Sapa.

No arrests were made and police are investigating. Police also arrested a man for the murder of a 46-year-old woman that took place on Friday at Mboya Village.

'She was killed with battle axes at about 1am. Details were still sketchy,' he said.
