Johannesburg - Six men were arrested for attempted murder, housebreaking and possession of an unlicensed firearm, said Western Cape police on Tuesday.
The housebreaking occurred early on Monday morning, said Constable Henry Durand.
The homeowner was awoken by the sound of voices. After retrieving his firearm from a safe, he opened his bedroom door and saw four men.
According to Durand, when the housebreakers saw the open door, one of them began firing at the home owner. He returned fire and shot one of the men in the stomach.
The four men then fled out of a window and into a red Toyota Tazz. After arriving on the scene, police found one of the men, aged 21, lying unconscious on the pavement. He had several head injuries. He was taken to a hospital where he remains under police guard.
A firearm, which was reported stolen in 2002, was found nearby.
Later on Monday, two of the housebreakers, age 23 and 25, were seen driving the Tazz near Atlantis. Police pulled them over and arrested them. The fourth of the housebreakers, age 21, was arrested at a hospital in Cape Town where he had sought treatment for his gunshot wound. He is currently in a prison hospital.
Following questioning of the four, police arrested another two men, age 40 and 22. Durand said that they had been behind the planning of the incident the four housebreakers carried out.
The six will appear in Malmesbury Magistrate's Court on Wednesday and face charges of housebreaking with intent to steal, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
