One of my favourite authors once penned these words: "The greatest want of the world is the want of men - men who will not be bought or sold, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who do not fear to call sin by its right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole, men who will stand for the right though the heavens fall."
I am proud today to say that for the last few months I have witnessed such a man, his name is Hugh Glenister.
I do not know the man personally and I never knew him before he burst onto the contaminated political scene of South Africa. I only know what I know about him from what has been published by newspapers and radio talk shows. He has earned my respect for daring to stand for what is right!
He put his money where his mouth is and such men demonstrate the calibre of men that can take this country to new heights.
When he launched his bid to stop the infamous Scorpions bill from being put to the vote in Parliament, he struck me as a man who was ready to do what is right, no matter how unpopular it might make him. In this act he showed the whole of South Africa that fighting for principle is something that should pre-occupy any leader, a driving force that should dominate any leader's mind.
Yes he never stood a chance of winning, but the fight for principle is never about winning, but about making a statement. When he lost his original bid, and also the subsequent bid to stop the highly conflicted Travelgate MPs from voting for the destruction of the Scorpions which stung them in the past, Mr Glenister did not go down as a loser, in fact he remains as a man who stood with a clear conscience against those who sold their souls, and betrayed multitudes of South Africans.
It may be that the men and women who have abused our trust in Parliament will vote to destroy the Scorpions against the wishes of the majority, it is all but a crownless triumph! All it has achieved is to prove once again to everyone, what happens when too much power is given to those who do not subscribe to high moral values that come with true leadership.
Mr Glenister indeed lost millions of rands in this noble quest, however I was thoroughly impressed when I read a quote attributed to him: "It was money well spent". Such men are not only examples for the many in this country, but he represents the many true leaders who quietly go about life, doing what is necessary to help this country to become a great place to live in.
He represents the men and women who will not be silenced, who will not look away when principle is compromised, South Africans who will shout truth to power. I therefore write this piece, in honour of a man, who remained true to his duty as a needle to the pole!
You are a true South African, Mr Glenister, you have taught us to see that beyond temporary material losses, there is a higher standard that we should all dare to reach.

"I am a retired South African - Dutch journalist. I spent a long time in South Africa reporting daily news items for the Sunday Times of Johannesburg, the Rand Daily Mail and the SA Press Association. My name is Adriana Oosthuysen-Stuijt.
I am a member of a team of journalists and ex-journalists and SA police officers who have been been compiling a record of the disproportionaly large number of ethnic-minority members (white Afrikaners, white English-speakers, Indian-South Africans especially, but also Chinese South Africans, ethnic-Africans from the rest of Africa - indeed anyone perceived as 'a foreigner'...) who have been killed and/or attacked and mutilated, maimed, often gang-raped, traumatised by the attacks of large feral gangs in South Africa since 2001.
Up to two years ago, these kind of apparently "hate-based attacks" primarily happened in the countryside and primarily targetted white Afrikaner/Boer farmers and smallholders or their families and their workers.
It has also been noted by crime researchers than 91% of all the attackers are black youths, and 9% of all these attackers on families inside their homes over the past two years are youths described as 'coloured'.
We have just recorded the 3,000th such 'farm-murder' since 1994 up to October 21 2008. There are now less than 13,500 'white' farmers remaining in the SA countryside, occuping less than ONE PERCENT of the entire SA land surface - down from the original 85,000 in 1994 on some 6% of the entire land-surface. (SA is a very arid country and most land is not suitable for farming). Many of these farmers left the countryside because of the violence, many others also because of the ANC-government's land-redistribution/confiscation programme which bars whites all access to such land now.
However this targetted "hate-based" gang-violence has now also moved into the cities and started targetting many other ethnic-minorities: now about 40 families a day are being attacked in SA towns and suburbs, too - and often, very little of value is looted: victims themselves perceive these attacks more and more as the attackers being out to 'kill or rape' them instead of being motivated by greed only. The SA police do not differentiate between such 'senseless' violence' in their records however, merely noting these down as 'armed robberies', often because cellphones or cars or minor items like alcoholic beverage are being taken away (to stop the victims from alerting the security services; with cars often abandoned after they were used for fleeing).
Clearly the financial motive is far less important in these attacks than is being claimed by the SA Police records.
South African deputy-Justice Minister Johnny de Lange has also recently warned that the criminal justice system has neared breaking point. (18 August 2008).
His view is that the entire criminal justice system -- consisting of the judiciary, police, prosecutors, correctional services and the Legal Aid Board -- is 'not working in its present state'.

Please note that the journalists inside South Africa report that these city-based attacks are very similar in pattern and methodology to those attacks which have been targetting mostly white (and to a more limited extent, Indian) farmers and smallholdings in rural areas since about 1991: these attacks invariably are accompanied with a very high level of violence, often gang-rape and mutilation of sexual parts, targetting unarmed families inside their homes; the gangs often arrive only to kill and maim -- and steal very little of any real resale value.
They often are also known to carry out advance 'intelligence' observations of their targets and their habits days before actually attacking - often they also make use of workers inside the targetted homes to gather information and to get electronic access to secured homes.
This is different to the ordinary 'criminals' one sees attacking people on the streets and in shopping centres.
These 'racist' attacks target ethnic minorities in mostly in the 'better-off' suburbs in South Africa.
This is relatively recent and in our view, a very worrying development -- especially when seen together with the high level of public hate-speech from leading members within the tricameral leadership at the moment.
These residential attacks are far less frequent in 'traditionally black' South African areas, even of wealthier black families, but in the townships, large feral youth gangs often travel the streets seeking out 'foreign African' refugees from the rest of Africa, asking them to say specific Xhosa-words for instance to identify them as 'foreigners'.
These people's shacks are often targetted for torching and their properties looted, often destroyed.
This also is in our view hate-crime rather than property-crime.

Please note that the vast majority of these armed attacks by this feral youth gangs are carried out against what one could essentially refer to as "ethnic-minorities" in these neighbourhoods.
However because the total numbers of all these minorities - the Afrikaners, the English-speaking whites, the Indian-South Africans, the Chinese and muslim-minorities - are so small when compared to the black-African population of some 45-million people, the higher-proportional rates of these attacks remains largely unnoticed, also because of the poor way in which SA Police crime-records are being maintained.
The attacks targetting the black Africans from the rest of Africa have gained much more media-attention abroad, while the attacks against other SA minorities are being practically ignored.
Hates-speech music - "Get Out", (Nyambo):
Often, these attacked survivors are also warned that 'they will be next' or 'that we will be back' and also often to 'Get Out,' 'go home where you came from', for example 77-year-old Indian-South African Joe Aboobaker had this warning 'you're next' with a death-head scribbled on his door after the torture-murder of his brother Ismail at Christoffel street in Pretoria-West.
This murder had all the hallmarks of a typical hate-crime with torture and mutilation.
This muslim-family had also been threatened and attacked previously with very little of value stolen and warned to 'get out'.

The words 'Get Out (Nyambo)" are particularly meaningful in this respect -- because of a DVD-Video by the South African rapper "Zubz".
The Afrikaner community, represented by the Freedom Party Plus, has recently lodged a formal complaint about this as 'hate speech' with the SA Human Rights commission for his song titled ‘Get out’ .
They also asked the state-run SA Broadcasting Corporation to stop broadcasting it - which they did do. However the song remains hugely popular in the townships and is still heard on other radiostations every day, and can still be sold in shops.

The song Kill the Boer, kill the Farmer
Again this song is heard being chanted in the townships all the time now, especially at party-political rallies and at trials involving white Afrikaners, my colleagues report.
This song was made popular by ex-president Nelson Mandela and while the previous ANC-president Thabo Mbeki had issued a statement asking people to refrain from chanting it, its use has soared since his resignation from his post:

All these activities in my view, most certainly indicate a rapidly growing atmosphere of hatred over the past year especially in South Africa which the current SA leadership is moreover, not reigning in at all.
Withholding the rights to ALL survival for South African whites:
Indigenous whites even with the best qualifications, also also deliberately barred from the labour market by law, thus making it impossible for them to make a living in South Africa.
This recently led to the SA labour union Solidarity wich represents Afrikaans-speaking workers (of all races) to launch a petition asking the current interim-government to end all these Affirmative Action laws, since the current young generation of whites have never had any benefits from apartheid (which ended in 1994).
These affirmative action laws were designed to bar a very small minority from the labour market in SA.
For instance the entry-exam qualifications for white youths at SA universities require them to pass at 78%, while blacks require passrates of 58%.
These laws, together with the ongoing land-confiscation programme, with another new law being planned to also include all white-owned subsistence smallholdings and all white-owned city properties (residential and business) -- means that South African whites woould basically no longer be survive in the land of their birth - at all., since they also are not allowed to own a company with more than 20 employees unless it is headed and half-owned by a black director.
The Inkatha Freedom Party recently criticised this 'much-publicised land reform programme,' noting that 16 of the 19 farms recently handed over to previously disadvantaged farmers 'have gone bust' in the Umlalazi Municipality region of KwaZulu-Natal.
Similar complaints are issued across the country, and the resulting sharp drop-off in local food-supplies have already led to a warning by SA Human Rights Commissioner Jody Jollapen that some 14,5-million people now no longer have any access to affordable food.
Inkatha Freedom Party said in the tiny Umlazi region alone, the failed land-redistribution policy has caused the loss of 150 000 tons
of sugar cane, 900 farming jobs and an income of R40-million.
They estimate that the loss to the local economy could be as high as R120-million.
It warns that 'apart from affecting the rural poor who depend entirely on agriculture for their livelihoods, the loss of farming output in Umlalazi has also threatened the milling capacity of the local Tongaat-Hulett Sugar facilities and all its jobs.

Gangs in the townships are not being disarmed of their illegal AK47s and Uzis:
There also is very little attempt by the SA leadership to make any kind of massive effort, for instance with large military backed house-to-house searches, to get all these illegal high-powered guns out of the townships.
They instead concentrate making more and more laws to discourage registered, legal gun-ownership for self-defence -- while there's very little attempts to round up these huge numbers of AK47s and Uzis from these township youth gangs.
Every once in a while, a few policemen are ordered to 'clean out the knives' from specific schools after a teacher or pupil is stabbed, but these are very cosmetic shows for the news-media.
The police reports that hundreds of thousands of "feral youths"(often AIDS-orphans raised on the streets) roam the streets all the time, often armed with AK47s and Uzis, and showing a very clear willingness to commit murder and carry out the most abhorrant acts of violence, creating a 'them and us' mindset amongst both the perpetrators and the victims.
They seem to have a very murderous mindset:

These gangs target every perceived 'foreigner' - all whites, foreign Africans and Indian- Chinese South Africans, but also any black African which they perceive as 'not being South African'.
Often, they go around in the townships at night asking people in pubs to pronounce certain Xhosa-words which cannot be properly pronounced by 'foreigners' to identify such persons for ethnic-cleansing from the townships.
The 'them-and-us' mindset is clearly present here too, and they are encouraged by leaders, often the close-knit (tribally-related) minitaxi-associations in the townships.
These taxi-associations are often seen by township residents as the only effective 'policing authority'.
A 12-year-old youngster was killed a month ago at Marloth Park bordering Mozambique after he and his comrades had fired shots with an AK47 at a white family with small children inside a holiday cottage without stealing anything at all.
Two other youngsters, 14 and 15, were also arrested with him, all were Shangaan-speaking tribal members (Shangaan live both in South Africa and neighbouring Mozambique).
The attack was accompanied by much racial abuse targetting in this case the (white Afrikaner-Boer) family.
They demanded no money, nor any food nor any valuables, just started shooting at the victims.
Fortunately they missed.
3,000 farmers/smallholders killed since 1994
On Oct 22 2008 the Crime Busters of South Africa website also registered the 3,000th (white Afrikaner and/or Indian-South African farmer/smallholder to be killed in the SA countryside since 1994 by such feral gangs.
The murders of white-Afrikaner farmers and smallholders has caused a large 'white flight' from the countryside since 1994:
that year 85,000 white farmers were registered with the tax department as taxpaying food-producers with 1,2-million black live-in workers;
in 2005, the SA tax records indicate that 13,500 white farm-owners remained, occupying less than one percent of the entire South African land surface, and with only 350,000 live-in workers and their families.
This 'white flight' also causes increasing criminality in the countryside, and over the past two years, a great many holiday-lodges have also been attacked which statistics were included in the 'farm-murder' statistics, since the nature of these attacks targetting holiday-resorts in rural areas shows identical attack-patterns, accompanied by a great deal of hate-speech and cruelty, and a clear willingness to kill the whites running these holiday-resorts.
Crime Busters of South Africa has been keeping a tally of these so-named farm murders since 2001.
Harrismith farmer Johannes Spies and of Rudi Roach, an Afrikaans High School teacher, were the latest white owners (a farm and a smallholding) to be gunned down and killed at their rural homesteads by heavily-armed, young black men -- bringing our own registered death rate for these mysterious, genocidal armed attacks to 3,000.
And again, during these two latest rural murders of Afrikaners and Indian-South Africans, very little of real value was stolen and there was a great deal of anti-white hate-speech targetting the victims.
Rudi's widow Veronica Roach, whose unarmed teenaged-son also was shot three times in the back by these attackers, said this gang 'had not come to rob us... they came to kill us.'
Of particular concern is the growing level of hate-speech from leaders inside the tricameral South African government and the fact that the African National Congress Youth League has recently set up two 'boot-camps' where military training is conducted in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal province.
Purportedly these camps were created to 'house war-veterans' but an analysis of the average age of these residents show that none are older than 18.
These trainees would have had to be about 7 years of age if they 'd been 'war-veterans', since the South African apartheid-era government handed over hegemony of the country to the ruling tricameral majority-government in 1994.
