A priest and churchgoer drowned during a baptism in a river in Soweto on Saturday afternoon, Johannesburg Emergency Services said.
The priest was baptising the young woman in the Snake River near Impala Road in Dobsonville when the current swept them away, said spokesperson Nana Radebe.
Some of the 15 other churchgoers present tried to save the two but the water levels were too high, said Radebe.
The region had heavy showers on Friday.
Emergency personnel and police divers found the priest's body but were still searching for the woman's at 6.30pm, said Radebe. - Sapa
