14 cops arrested as part of fraud syndicate

I would wager that this is just the teeniest tip of the iceberg. The system is, let me spell it.. F-U-K-K-E-D, from top to bottom.

De Aar -
Fourteen policemen have been arrested in De Aar, in the Northern Cape, over their alleged part in a fraud syndicate, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations said on Tuesday.

They were believed to be among 21 police officers, two reservists and nine civilians who allegedly siphoned off 1 080 litres of petrol in fraudulent transactions, said spokesperson Musa Zondi.

The arrests on Monday followed an undercover operation which started in May.

Zondi said WesBank's fleet division was currently carrying out a forensic audit into the abnormal petrol consumption.

"So far, the estimate of the loss to the state stands at R450 000," he said.

National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has commended police for the breakthrough, saying it was not only cleaning up the streets "but also its own backyard". - SAPA
