Zille Cancels Women's Month

All womens month events planned by the department of the premier in the Western Cape have been cancelled, Premier Helen Zille announced on Thursday.

She said the funds - more than a quarter of a million rands - would instead be used for bursaries for girl primary school pupils.

"When our new government came to office, we found plans and budgets for two big jamboree and talk-shop events that would have cost hundreds of thousands of rands," she said in a statement.

One of these events was to be held in an upmarket city centre hotel.

"We decided that it would serve gender empowerment better by cancelling these events, and allocating the money to four bursaries."

As a result, R320 000 would be divided into four bursaries of R80 000 each, to pay for the schooling of girl pupils from financially disadvantaged families who were achieving good results.

The pupils would be selected from across the province. - Sapa

Zille may have started off on the wrong foot being too liberal but we all make mistakes and she deserves a second chance for showing more fight than all the male politicians in the country put together.

One drop of sanity in an ocean of corruption and financial abuse.

Another point, as much as I admire the sentiment, it is wrong. How about doing away with gender altogether and use the money, oh, I dunno, towards ALL kids, boys and girls.

I mean really, are girls the problem in SA? Are girls the ones marauding throughout the country? Seems to me, we need to start spending some more attention on male issues for a change. That's where the problems lie.

@Doberman
that's a point.. hadn't thought of it.
It's great to see evidence though of the Cape being properly run. Sadly, most foriegners particularly don't understand that the ANC is so desperate for power, they will actually ship in black voters(ANC of course) to outnumber the opposition and retake the province.

They will do this out of spite and for their hunger for power, even though it has been demonstrated that THEIR OWN PEOPLE are better off under the DA. So, even though things are getting done here, it's official ANC policy to screw it up deliberately.
