Vandalism deliberate - CPUT students

What a bright future we have with our upstanding youth.

Students were expected to gather on the Cape Town and Bellville campuses of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) on Tuesday morning to discuss climbing tuition fees, and to embark on a second day of protests.

Anda Bici, the chairman of the CPUT's central Student Representative Council (SRC), said on Tuesday morning that by 8am students had already started gathering on both campuses to discuss how the day's protest should proceed.

On Tuesday students ran amok at both campuses, trashing the interior of several buildings and, on the Cape Town campus, raided the cafeteria.

They emptied shelves, fridges and stole money from cash registers.

Police had to fire rubber bullets at protesting students in Cape Town in order to disperse them.

This came after students had pelted police with rocks, and after police had given students a warning ordering them to clear the area.

In Bellville, students went to the second floor of the main administration building and searched for Vice-Chancellor Vuyisa Mazwi-Tanga, who they believed was hiding in the building.

After several minutes inside the building, with no response from administrators, the students started throwing milk cartons and boxes of stationery around.

"There's going to be litter, there's going to be graffiti," said the central SRC's Maducu Mante.

He said students were willing to use any means necessary to have their complaints heard.

The SRC told the Cape Argus that vandalism was done "wholly on purpose", because students wanted to make the point that the way they were allegedly being treated by management was illegal.

Police vans raced to the scene to drive students out of the building.

Some students blocked the entrance of the administration building so that staff could not leave their offices, but dispersed after the SRC asked them to do so.

The students were due to meet again on Tuesday at 8am.

One student was arrested in Tuesday's fracas in Bellville, on
charges of public disturbance and damage to property.

In Cape Town, hundreds of chanting students descended on CPUT's central campus, marched through a number of faculty buildings and broke into one of the cafeterias.

S
ome protesters broke down the glass door of one cafeteria, then cleaned out the fridges, took everything off the shelves and raided the cash register.

The institution's registrar, Alwyn van Gensen, said yesterday that students had misunderstood the extent to which CPUT would push its tuition fees up next year.

Students said that CPUT would hike its fees by R5 000 in 2010.

But Van Gensen said final fees for 2010 had not been decided upon. Instead, the upfront payment required had been debated by CPUT's council and would be increased from R1 800 to R3 000.

And these are THIRD level students??
This is something you need to see, Black Coffee. This defines unfathomable; trashing your own university and actually stealing money from it. Lucky there is no KFC on campus...

It's not a university, it's a zoo. Exhibit A: Homo assinus pigmentosa.

And people wonder why we stereotype. Must be a racist camera with black and white film?

I recall in the early 90's at the University of the Western Cape how much destruction blacks could sow.

Thier televisions in the hostels used to be chained to the walls. I went to visit a boon once and came to see that the cover of the tv with the chain still attached was all that was left. The insides had been stollen.

Blacks - its normal.

Bad, bad university to tempt the poor black man to show his true nature by displaying anything that can be stolen or broken.

A university is an institute of higher learning. What are beasts of the field doing there?

These same beasts will get top AA jobs and seeing how they behave here it's no wonder they cannot do anything right, and that everything is in disorder and in a state of collapse!

Viking - I agree on one thing, this really is unfathomable. See, we can find some common ground somewhere. Where I will probably differ with some other people who post here is I think this too goes back to legacy of apartheid. Saying so, I am not saying that this is "whitey's fault." Last year a similar protest occurred at University of Johannesburg over tuition, police had to be called and they fired rubber bullets to disperse what quickly turned into a riot. I asked a friend of mine - Thabang who works for "Business Day" why they do this and that I had never witnessed such behavior myself when I visited UJ. He told me it became ingrained during apartheid and all protests that went on then that when people do no get their way, they demonstrate and break things, attack cars, throw rubbish in streets (I understand striking municipal workers did the latter somewhere in SA just days ago). There seems to be a certain mob mentality which takes over where as soon as one or two demonstrators start doing the crazy crap, like you see here, others join in instead of stopping them.

More evidence of mud hut mentality - we made the mistake of rebuilding everything they burnt down in the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Black people will alway's resort to violence because it works.

I never doubted it.
Nobody denies that this type of violence and destruction comes from apartheid times, but those days are long gone. These students were between 2 and 5 years old when apartheid officially ended, and weren't even born when their parents were doing the same thing in the 80s!

These are clearly not, then, the same people who acted like this in the past - although maybe they are their children. In which case have they been raised on riot stories around the dinner table?
If so, then that's pretty bad parenting.
Maybe they saw it on tv?
Or, just maybe, they've been taught that this is how you get what you want - in which case it's a cultural thing.

The people caught on camera need to be expelled and prosecuted, and in Cape Town, that's very likely to happen.

I guess slavery must be to blame for the same manifested behaviour in New Orleans post hurricane Katrina.

Exzanian said...

Oops, looks like "Back Chat" just took a shot off the hip there with the trusty old "apartheid to blame"
gun again. Viking, you are so right, these are youngsters who were 3 or 4 years old and could not even spell "petrol and matches" at the stage when the last vestiges of apartheid were being negotiated away at Codesa.
I think 15 years is ample time to have changed the entire mindset behind "liberation before education" No, these are spoilt little bastards and they should all be arrested and charged for this barbarous behaviour. But hey, look what Azania has for a Minister of Higher education. A liquor swilling, popcorn faced, bulbous eyed commie. Have fun everyone!

Islandshark said...

@ VI: Spot on!

Pity all the blacks crying foul in New Orleans also don't mention that for years funds intended for flood defenses where rather channeled to social programmes (read benefits).

But when the crap hit the fan, it suddenly was whitey's fault and a result of oppression. Then all the free beers were forgotten - that is until the shops were plundered...

Exzanian said...

Man I'm mad as a snake reading BC's glib little justification again. What he is arguing for is a justification for this type of behaviour 15 years after apartheid ended. Jeeziz Cripes, how much longer must we be expected to crawl on our bellies and accept this kind of intolerable behaviour!!!!! It's just totally unacceptable, finish and klaar.

Black Coffeee has a knack for doing a disappearing act when the facts are staring him in the face. Next time around after his disappearance, he will come back again with the same arguments he presented here. It becomes very frustrating.

Viking said...

The point is, these bandits didn't learn their behaviour under apartheid because they weren't alive then! This is different, a cultivated culture of destruction with a bit of larceny thrown in for fun. Im starting to agree with Treacle Bender here .. looks like outside influence to me.

When the blacks burnt LA to the ground, they still blamed slavery. not sure why you humor that idiot Greg

Viking said...

Funny, when the actual slaves were freed in 1865 they didn't cause that much damage!

FishEagle said...

There may be an outside influence but it's not often that black mobs need a reason to become volatile. It's just not something that we, as whites grasp well. This has just happened too many times and it was not an isolated incident at all.

Murdering immigrants last year , Also apartheid?

They got so exited , half the people they killed were in fact South Africans.

This mob mentality is inbred. Seen it in at least 9 African countries.

Viking said...

True, Anon.
the xenophobic riots were nowt to do with whitey, and it would take great imagination to suggest otherwise.
@FE, spot on. It's commonplace, and baffling!

Black Coffee said...

Exzanian - my post was not a justification of the behavior. I provided one explanation for the behavior, without justifying it. The fact that they were born when apartheid was being negotiated away - that is something to consider. It probably gets passed on generation to generation or they learn it from TV footage like Viking said. Perhaps many of them have older siblings who grew up in 1980s and witnessed township violence, people attacking police stations and cops' homes, etc. FE - I have not visited other African countries, except for Lesotho. However, there are many other African countries with universities and I have not heard in news of students going on rampages in Nigerian universities for example or in Makerere University in Uganda. Anon 5:00 am - you better believe that when blacks rioted in LA in 1992 they blamed slavery. They looked at footage of white cops beating Rodney King to a pulp in 1991. Then in 1992 the cops who did this got off scott-free after an all white jury in Simi Valley acquitted them. Many blacks then were saying something along lines of "American society just spat in our face and essentially told us you are still a slave." I am not saying it was right for blacks (and some Latinos by the way) to riot in LA in '92 or for students to do so in Cape Town now. I am just saying we can put these things in context, these things do not occur in a vacuum, nor is it due to some "genetic deficiency" in blacks. I do not know about South Africa, but in US we have had several instances of white college students rioting because bars close early. Something of this exact sort happened in college town of Athens, Ohio a couple years ago. No one assigns that to whites' genetic deficiency, nor does the supposedly "liberal" media dwell on such incidents, but they have happened.

FishEagle said...

@BC "....but in US we have had several instances of white college students rioting because bars close early. Something of this exact sort happened in college town of Athens, Ohio a couple years ago. No one assigns that to whites' genetic deficiency..."

The assumption that the blacks have a genetic deficiency is based on the fact that they are not capable of realizing how much they stand to lose with their behaviour. And that stupidity is not restricted to students only, although it is restricted to blacks only. Just less than two weeks ago the black municipal workers trashed all the major city centers. I saw how whites were picking up trash after the mob left, to my utter disgust. I'd find a black to pick up the rubbish.

We are living in Africa and we are at the bottom of the food chain. Instead of working our butts off to climb up the food chain, we are destroying anything and everything we have to help us move forward. That is why the blacks are rightly considered stupid.

I'm not going to go and do a search just to prove you wrong, but I bet there must have been dozens of cases of African students trashing universities. I won't take that issue further and I hope that you will do the necessary research if the issue is still important to you. Don't talk about things you don't know about.

".... nor does the supposedly "liberal" media dwell on such incidents..."

Please don't make out as if the liberal media dwells on these incidents with the blacks, as if it is only fair that they should give the white students (that you mentioned) the same treatment. The media coverage about the issues are absolutely abysmal partly because discussions about race became taboo. Hope you are happy in your complicity with the status quo.

@Black Coffee: I'm really not sure why you're on this blog. In future, please just read and don't comment because you're just plain naive. You obviously haven't lived through what we've lived through in SA therefore you're NOT qualified to even think let alone comment or postulate. Footsak.
