New York will host next month's inaugural Mandela Day to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday, headlined by a concert featuring Aretha Franklin, Dave Stewart and many others.Related:

Set for July 18 at Madison Square Garden, the show also will include performances by Wyclef Jean, Queen Latifah, Josh Groban, Cyndi Lauper, Jesse McCartney and TLC along with Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, the Soweto Gospel Choir and other celebrated African artists. It's part of the 46664 campaign, which was launched to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and was named after Mandela's Robben Island prison number.
President Clinton will host a fundraiser dinner July 15 with Mandela's wife, Graca Machel.
"More than any other human being, Madiba has been the great inspiration for the life I lead and the work I do," Clinton said. "In return for everything Madiba has taught us, we each owe it to him to support his work and legacy by doing and living our own as best we can, not just on this day but throughout our entire lives."
Mandela Day is designed to honor Mandela's inspiration and values and celebrate his life each July 18.
Tim Massey, international director of the 46664 campaign, said, "Mandela Day is about creating a movement for positive change and establishing one day to reflect upon, celebrate and make manifest the values that guide Nelson Mandela."
Hollywood stars and 46664 backers Forest Whitaker, Sharon Stone and Susan Sarandon are among those who have committed to attend the New York concert. 46664 will work with organizations in other cities and communities to create a worldwide series of Mandela Day events.
