Horror and shock that the female teachers did not report what the male teachers were doing. The measure of a civilisation is how women and children are treated. You can't change a "culture" that reduces women and children to objects of violence and sexual abuse. These are not teachers who were brutalised during the apartheid era. You can't blame whites for the self inflicted can on your tail.
"For five teachers to be accused of the same thing clearly indicates that it didn't start yesterday," said an angry parent, whose children attend Makhumbuza High School.
She went on to say that some of the teachers suggested that they "knew" what was happening yet they did nothing about it.
"What is even more repugnant is that these are female teachers. What happened to their maternal instincts?" she asked.
Five teachers were accused and suspended and one of them has been charged for allegedly having sex with pupils at the school and has appeared in court for a bail application which was postponed to tomorrow.
It is reported that the teachers concerned lured the pupils with alcohol and cash under the pretext of "giving them a good time".
About 13 girls between the ages of 16 and 21 were reportedly preyed upon. Since then, some of the pupils have been transferred to other schools by the Department of Education and more are expected to be transferred soon.
"Teachers are guardians of our children for almost the entire week. For them to sleep with them, as has been suggested, is barbaric. What is our society coming to?" said another parent.
Others in the community feel that this issue is slowly crippling many schools, especially in townships, and in the process is tarnishing the reputation of "good and noble" teachers.
Asks Sizani Mkhize who lives near the school: "Why has this matter been reported by pupils instead of teachers or members of the governing body?
Operation Bobby Bear founder Jackie Branfield said 40 pupils at the school revealed that they had been victims of sexual offences at home and at school by some of the teachers.
Joyce Mjoli, who lives in the same area, said the situation needed to be looked at holistically.
"It is wrong for a teacher to have any sexual relations with a pupil. However, our children today do not know how to carry themselves. They start drinking, dating and clubbing at age 12 and they see nothing wrong with dating a man old enough to be their father.
"They apply the same mentality when interacting with teachers at school. That's why this sort of thing prevails.
"It is a broader issue of moral degeneration in society. We as parents need to find better ways of disciplining our children or else it will be a long road ahead."
Mjoli added that she would often notice female students "popping in" the taverns in their school uniform.
"Some of them are sometimes in the company of their older boyfriends who drive fancy cars. This behaviour is not unique to any particular school, I see it happening in many places and people have begun to accept it."
Captain Clifton Parks, the spokeswoman for the Child Protection Unit, said in a sister paper, the Daily News, that 14 statements that contain various allegations from sexual assault to crimen injuria from other students were submitted to the director of public prosecutions and the police were investigating.
The teachers concerned are on suspension with full pay until the matter is concluded.

Teacher / guardian sex with white pupils went on / goes on in white schools as well. Still happens. See Daily Dispatch sex cases. Ask any experienced white RSA teacher.
@Anon 6:47. Nobody denies that. What we base our opinions on, is not black swans, but on the preponderance of probability. It is called inductive reasoning. A few cases of white-on-white abuse does not negate the fact that black-on-white/black abuse is common place. However, it would only take one statistically significant cluster or grouping of blacks to display alternate behaviour to force us to change our opinions. You are welcome to produce this evidence. In the meantime our working assumption is that the "Noble Savage" is as real as the "Easter Bunny".
