Mayor hit and run after convoy causes pile-up

Punks. The lot of them. If they're not shooting out tyres, they are beating, shooting and killing motorists. These are not cabinet ministers that perhaps merit a motorcade, these are your everyday cheapo knuckle-dragging baboons inhabiting the lower reaches of the political tree behaving as if the road belongs to them and the rules don't apply. As we post all of this, we must ask ourselves: what do we do about it? We need answers. And to all you other legal minds out there, does the leaving of the scene of an accident not constitute a hit and run, therefore a crime?

A MAYORAL motorcade caused a pile-up at the intersection of Strandfontein Road and La Roche Drive yesterday after the lead vehicle skipped a red traffic light and smashed into an oncoming car.

A driver who witnessed the incident, Ken Bartle, said the accident took place at about 6.30am.

Mayor Nondumiso Maphazi was apparently rushing to the opening of the Ironman competition at the beachfront when the car leading her motorcade, a Toyota Fortune, went through the red lights at high speed and hit a Ford Bantam on the side.

The Bantam then spun around and hit an ADT bakkie on the opposite side.

“I was standing at the traffic light,” said Bartle.

“The mayor was inside her official silver Audi.”

Despite the pile-up, the mayor continued on to her engagement. The three cars were badly smashed, but Bartle said no one was injured.

Police said last night they had no details of the accident but would investigate.

Attempts to reach the mayor were unsuccessful.
