8 000+ Saps firearms missing
Cape Town - The SA Police Service has lost, had stolen or otherwise misplaced 8 286 firearms, including pistols, shotguns, rifles and revolvers, over the past three years.
Of these, it has recovered less than 900, according to a written reply by the Safety and Security ministry to a parliamentary question posed by the Democratic Alliance.
Up to the end of January in the current (2008/09) financial year - from April 1, 2008, to March 31 - the police force had 329 of its firearms stolen, and lost another 183.
SAPS can also not account for the whereabouts during this period of a further 1995 weapons, which are listed under the heading "not yet classified".
This is understood to mean it cannot determine whether the firearms have been lost or stolen, only that they are missing. WTF?
The reply also notes a total of 156 firearms were recovered during the current financial year, up to February 9.
In the previous (2007/08) financial year, 191 firearms were lost, a further 250 stolen and 1 484 are still "not yet classified".
A total of 294 firearms were recovered during this period. In 2006/07, a total of 1635 firearms were lost, 593 stolen and 1 628 remain in the "not yet classified" category.
A total of 442 firearms were recovered during this period. According to the same written reply, South Africa's municipalities have lost or had stolen over eight percent of the firearms issued them.
Of the total 15 311 firearms they own, the municipalities have reported 1 260 lost or stolen.
It is not clear whether this is over the same three-year period as the SAPS figures.
"The municipalities continually report lost and stolen firearms to the respective police stations," the reply states.
Before we can begin to address the mind boggling crime stats in this country, we first need to weed out corrupt, criminal and useless cops.
Until that day arrives, we are screwed folks.

8286 FIREARMS IN JUST THREE YEARS!
WTF?
HOW MANY FIREARMS HAS THE ANC POLICE GIVEN TO THE GENOCIDAL GANGS (EH, SORRY, "CRIMINALS") SINCE 1994?
This is truly shocking, but even worse is the omission of criminal charges and subsequent convictions against these cops.
These firearms aren't stolen, they are sold on. To be used against the very people who sold them. Such is the reasoning of these mugs.
There has to be a higher consequence for so-called stolen firearms and then you'll see less firearms being 'stolen'. Put say, a R10000 fine for each firearm lost/stolen and watch how firearms will cease being 'stolen' or 'lost'.
@Doberman: The R10k fine would be an excellent idea if the cops were prepared to conduct their own affairs in the same way they lay down the rules for the public. If you, Joe Citizen, still possess a gun licence and are not in possession of the gun you bought and can't explain what happened to it, you get a HEFTY FINE.
Unfortunately the police don't see it that way themselves. When we were called upon to hand in our guns in the interests of a gun free, non-violent South Africa, I did not hand mine in because I knew it would be sold off to a criminal. That particular piece of propaganda stank to high heaven and was an omen of things to come.
Don't expect it to stop. The SAPS are infiltrated with corrupt cops. Isn't that so, Sergeant Kevin Ramsoondar of Edenvale SAPS?
Why don't we name crooked cops on this blog as a warning to the public? There is nothing the police will do about it, they are too lazy and complacent to get off their arses. Besides, the privacy of this blog is endorsed by the SAHRC.
But only genuinely corrupt cops, where you have laid a charge against the Anti-Corruption Unit, and have received no feedback or action.
It seems very human to loose stuff.
Have a little sympathy. Even the brilliant Zuma don't seem to remember where he put his machine gun. He is calling for it periodically. Don't ask too much from the cops either. Not very smart most of them... as for Doberman's suggestion : this would only increase the prices of illigal guns by 10 big ones... would mess up Tito's inflation figures...
@ anon 7:55
You may name and shame whomever you like on this blog. If you want, send me links to particular stories that have irked you and I will happily post it. We need to start naming the douches effing up our country.
@Doberman: I'm Anon 07.55 and it's good to know readers can name and shame on this blog. It's not so much stories that irk one as personal experiences with the police that have been irking me of late.
Name and shame, fair and square, just so long as people who are innocent are not named and shamed. It's one thing not to like someone on a personal level, but quite another to really hate someone's guts if they are in a position of public trust and have abused that power against you, and you also know that particular person is carrying on with this kind of criminality, and will continue to do so again and again and again and again, without fear of punishment.
It's also irksome when you know that that sergeant's superintendent at Edenvale SAPS knows very well what the sergeant is up to, but does nothing to stop him.
I know a white policeman would never, ever have tried fraud and extortion on me the way Sergeant Kevin Ramsoondar did. You can call me a racist, that's quite OK by me. What that criminal disguised as a policeman did and continues to do, is not only motivated by personal greed but also by racism. The Anti-Corruption guys can go and look up complaints against Ramsoondar if one of them happens to read this. There must be quite a few complaints against him by now. The public have a right to know that the so-called anti-corruption hotline advertised in newspapers is nothing more than a PR exercise with no teeth behind it.
If someone else has had a rotten experience with the police, come out and say it. The odds are very high that these cops are doing the same thing to other members of the public so they won't necessarily know who it's coming from. People have the right to know who they should stay the hell away from if they need to go to a specific police station. Try to avoid Edenvale police station altogether, they are rotten from the top downwards. Rather go to Bedfordview or another station nearby. If you come across corruption and extortion there as well, please report it here.
