Robber shot in JHB chase

A housebreaking in Roodepoort has ended with a car chase and the shooting of one of the robbers.

Johannesburg - A housebreaking ended with a car chase and a robber shot dead in Roodepoort, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

At 13:00 on Friday, four men broke into a home in Roodepoort, said Superintendent Thembi Nkhwashu.

The owner of the house, a man in his 50s, was home with his domestic worker. When the men broke in, the man was able to hit his panic alarm.

It set off a loud sound which was heard by the homeowner's neighbour who is a policeman.

The off-duty policeman came to the aid of his neighbour and was able to arrest one of the robbers before police back-up arrived. Police found two more robbers hiding in the house.

In an aerial search from a helicopter, the fourth robber was seen hiding in a tree in the same house's yard.

Realising he had been spotted, the robber fled over a fence and hijacked a passing car. Police gave chase.

In an attempt to evade the police, the robber abandoned the car and hijacked a second car.

Police remained in pursuit, cornering him when he crashed the car. he opened fire on them. They returned fire. The robber was fatally wounded.
