Zimbabweans were dying of starvation and South Africa could not sit with its arms folded, government spokesperson Themba Maseko has said, announcing urgent efforts to relieve food shortages in the crisis-torn country.
The Zimbabwean government pleaded for international help on Thursday after declaring a national emergency over a cholera epidemic that has left more than 560 dead.
Maseko said the South African government was extremely concerned about food shortages in Zimbabwe and planned to send food and other humanitarian aid.

President Robert Mugabe's government has been mired in turmoil since he lost a first-round election in March. He later claimed victory in a one-sided run-off after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out amid a wave of deadly political violence.
Banks on Thursday started issuing a new 100-million Zimbabwe dollar note, worth about US$14 (R142) and increased withdrawal limits.
