Beeld today confirms a horrific and even worse, very worrying change in Police attitude toward whites. Two white men who arrested a criminal were themselves locked up and refused their right to see their attorney. It is a cornerstone of every civilized country’s legal system that if you are arrested, you are entitled to legal representation. It even forms the basis of an acquittal if that right is denied, even if you are guilty.
In this case, two white farmers were locked up in police cells overnight after catching an attacker on their farm and handing them over to police.
The next day, a charge of attempted murder was withdrawn in court. Their attorney said there was no evidence whatsoever and the magistrate threw out the case. As is to be guessed they are now going to sue the cops.
In a nutshell, an ex worker arrived on the farm, stabbed the foreman’s wife and assaulted another four workers whereafter he fled.
The two farmers and their workers caught him and handed him over to the cops. The next day the cops arrived at the farm and asked the farmers to go to the police station to make a statement. On arrival they were arrested and chucked into the cells.
They then phoned their lawyer who duly arrived - and now comes the crunch. The inspector in charge of the cells told him he did not have the authority to allow him to see his clients!! Now this is utter bullshit. No matter what you are charged with you are entitled to see your lawyer. No matter where or what time. That is the theory anyway.
This attorney then called the investigating officer who said he was busy – yeah right, probably forcing someone to pay a bribe so he can drink at his local shebeen – and would be there in an hour and a half.
He then called the simian supt. Caroline Mokatsi, the commander of the Marble Hall police who merely told him to buzz off. The attorney says he is going to complain to the Complaints Directorate but the talk is they are totally useless anyway.
So this is the story. The fact remains though that this will undoubtedly happen again and again. The disgusting circumstances in our police cells are well known by now. Assaults, murders and male rapes are an everyday occurrence. So to paraphrase Breyten Breytenbach, get the hell out of this cesspit known as South Africa, while you can.
