It could have been worse. He could have sung one of Steve Hofmeyr's opuses. What is it with South African politicians and music? Ah well, kidding aside this is an improvement on what we've seen the past 15 years.
COPE chairman Terror Lekota called on the new party on Sunday to nurture a non-racial political culture and set an example by breaking into the Afrikaans folk song "Suikerbossie".
"We must all enjoy each other," Lekota said in Afrikaans after a pitch-perfect rendition of the song's opening lines.
"We must bring in elements of other cultures. We will not understand each other if we just go on with the old habits. So we cannot just sing in seSotho, sometimes we must sing in Afrikaans as well."
He also pleaded with COPE members to sing the verses of "Die Stem" that have been included in South Africa's post-apartheid national anthem
"It is a beautiful country. When we sing "waar die kranse antwoord gee," we feel this and it motivates us," he said.
Neels Flatten, a prominent COPE member from the Western Cape, said if the party's launch would help to make South Africa a truly non-racial democracy. "If this works, we will do a great thing for South Africa, which is take race out of South African politics."

When they start giving back the Afrikaans schools to the Afrikaners - they have already lost more than 60% of them - then I might just start believing him.
Fellers I have been looking for that terrific photo on your website of Mugabe and Mbeki sitting in that fancy living room, laughing and telling each other Crisis What Crisis? I cannot remember which page you put it on. Could you please post it again or send it to me? Thanks
Yip, it will be a great thing if he means what he says. From a sceptic's point of view, I would suggest that they tread carefully.
Jer 13:23 - Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.
Were those schools private or public institutions? If privatization could have saved them from beeing changed by the new government, why did the old government not do that in advance of handing over power?
That actually would have saved a lot of other things, like the state run companies, utilities and even roads and beaches. Am I right?
Best wishes,
Leifur
@Leifur. Dinkum!
Dinkum? What does that mean? Please clarify.
I concede on not knowing the situation in SA well enough even though I am interested. I just would have thought that a private company and private schools would have better independence from a government than someone who gets fund directly from the government.
But for such schools to work they probably would need for the education system to be built upon some kind of voucher system.
Best wishes,
Leifur
"Fair dinkum" is Australian slang for true, genuine, the truth. In other words, used as.."the guy is fair dinkum". He is telling the truth, being genuine, fair.
"like the state run companies, utilities and even roads and beaches. Am I right?
Best wishes,
Leifur"
They did privatise them Leifur, AND then the puppetmasters handed them over to members of the ANC!
Why must the Afrikaans speakers pay school fees for their schools when the Xhosa, Zulu, English, Sotho speakers don't???
Or is this yet ANOTHER attempt to wipe out the Afrikaans speakers?
