1.5 million people in SA pay bribes each year

On the back of the Corruption Index posted yesterday, it is not only government and corporations that must take the blame for our poor showing but it seems we citizens are quite amenable to greasing palms which does not help to engender a positive value system in the country.

An average of 1.5 million South Africans pay bribes every year to speeding offences, matters related to policing and getting a particular job.

These were some of the shocking statistics announced at a Western Cape Government Anti-corruption Summit held at the Cape Town International Airport on Wednesday.

In his presentation, Willie Hofmeyr, head of the Special Investigation Unit, referred to the 2004 National Victims of Crime Survey that cited corruption as the most common crime after housebreaking.

“It remains a huge challenge to totally eradicate corruption.” Hofmeyr said there was a worrying increase in serious organized crime where syndicates were infiltrating government departments. He made specific reference to the Department of Home Affairs.

Hofmeyr also expressed concern about the increase in sophisticated cyber crime and emphasized the need for monitoring systems.
