A man was killed and his alleged accomplice seriously injured when they crashed a car they had just hijacked from a Jeppe High School teacher in Lyndhurst on Thursday morning, Johannesburg Emergency Services said.
Spokesperson Percy Morokane said the men crashed into the wall following a high speed chase to evade a security company patrol vehicle.
"The Jeppe High School teacher was about to leave for school when the two men pounced on him in his driveway at gunpoint. Just after the men drove off with his Honda Jazz, the teacher flagged down a passing security vehicle," he said.
What followed was a high speed chase around the streets of Lyndhurst, with both parties shooting at each other.
But as the men in the hijacked car turned a corner from Hares into Morkel road, the Honda veered out of control, crashed through a wall and landed in the front yard of a nearby house.
One of the men died on the scene while the other was rushed to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic hospital in a serious condition.
Two security guards who had been chasing after the two alleged hijackers also crashed into the same wall, sustaining minor injuries.
The 25-year-old teacher's wallet and cellphone were recovered in the car, which was a wreck.
"Motorists should avoid Hares and Morkel roads as they have been cordoned off," Morokane said.
