ANC starts official breakup

A number of ANC branches have walked out of a heated official party meeting on Friday afternoon, and declared their intention of following former defense minister Mosiuoa Lekota to a national convention to form a breakaway party from the ANC.

Representatives of at least 18 branches in the Amahlati sub-region of the Amathole District, which also includes Buffalo City, Great Kei and Mbhashe, said they refused to accept, what they termed, “the thuggery” of other members of the party, in reference to members supporting ANC president Jacob Zuma.

The walk-out is the first public display of defiance in South Africa, following Lekota’s announcement earlier this week that he was serving “divorce papers” on the ANC and that a national convention could be established to look at forming a breakaway party.
