Um yes, we've been over this before. The black South African's fascination with fire.
See:
Students set fire to residence (reason: demanding vice-chancellor resignation),
Black commuters torch 21 buses (reason: ticket sales were slow),
Angry black commuters burn buses (reason: buses ran out of diesel),
Six die in Pretoria building fire, (reason: protesting evictions),
Mozambican man immolated in South Africa (reason: xenophobic riots) and so on.
That's just in the last four months. Add 19 buses to the tally. By burning their 'tools', the geniuses have guaranteed themselves unemployment.
But the history of this company is interesting. We did a post 26 Aug 2008 about this particular company.
In short, on June 1 2003 Remant Alton as part of a BEE deal, took over the fairly well-run Durban Transport authority at a cost of R70 million.
Just five years down the road the municipal bus service had deteriorated to such an extent that the municipality was left with egg on its face and has had to intervene and fork out R405-million(!) to buy back the bus business.
But it will still be all smiles for Remant Alton. Despite the company's financial problems and poor service, Remant Alton will remain as operator, leasing the buses from the municipality.
The deal will benefit the company as it will use the proceeds to resolve its financial woes, and will get paid to run the service without the worry of maintenance or repair of buses.
Something smells fishy. The buses don't belong to the company, they belong to Durban's ratepayers who will no doubt cough up big time for some spanking new buses for our Mr Remant Alton, geddit?
At least 19 buses belonging to Durban's troubled municipal bus service were set alight in the early hours of Tuesday morning, police said.
Constable Siwe Nxumalo said the buses operated under licence by Remant Alton — whose drivers are on an illegal strike — were set alight at the company's Ntuzuma depot shortly after 4am."
A security guard on duty told police he heard a bang, and when he checked he saw the buses on fire," she said. The buses were completely gutted. "No arrests have been made. We don't know who could have done this," she said.
Remant Alton bus drivers embarked on illegal protest action two weeks ago, leading to the dismissal of nearly 1000 employees earlier this week. The workers were demanding that they be employed by the eThekwini Municipality as they claimed Remant Alton had financial mismanagement problems.
Nxumalo said police could not confirm whether the arson attack was linked to the ongoing strike.
Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said initial investigations revealed that the buses were petrol-bombed by "a number of suspects". Police believed damage to the buses was estimated at R35-million.
Remant Alton human resources manager Jabulani Mngadi was not immediately available for comment.
The eThekwini Transport Authority's (ETA) deputy head Eric Muller said on Friday afternoon that the attack would be discussed when ETA met with the Remant Alton management later on Friday.
DA Durban caucus leader John Steenhuizen said: "Whilst recognising that there are heightened frustrations around the Remant Alton debacle, it must be recorded that resorting to acts of violence will not address the problems which are currently being faced."
"The DA sincerely hopes that in this period of transition of ownership of these buses, the buses were still properly insured and that the ratepayers of the city will not have to pick up the tab for the unlawful acts of others," he said.
The eThekwini municipality privatised its bus fleet, selling it to Remant Alton for R70-million in 2003. Many of the striking Remant Alton employees are demanding that they be re-employed by the municipality.

I am employed by Remant Alton for the past 5years. Our salary pay date is on the 27th of each month. I've always been paid before the 27th despite the financial problems. I must say, the drivers employed @ Remant are not capable for the job. They dont know how to check oil, water, fuel on these buses. The most important things in a vehicle. Most of them are very rude and have no respect for passengers. The drivers are to blame for the company's financial problems. The dont know how to drive properly causing accidents and mechanical damages to the buses including for the very new buses. Mr Nzuza is the cause for the strikes at Remant. This is the 2nd time after holding a union meeting drivers had went on a strike. The company should fire him and the other trouble makers. These drivers are stupids. They are burning buses. Is this the way to solve problems or to create problems? Unemployment rates are high. This people dont appreciate their jobs. They are animals. They are not worried about other people losing their jobs and kids losing their education because of no transport. I hope this problem is resolved asap so the company can provide a service to the city of Durban!
