Motlanthe elected South Africa President

The South African Parliament has elected a new President to replace Thabo Mbeki, who was ousted in an internal ANC power struggle.

Former trade unionist and freedom fighter Kgalema Motlanthe was elected as South Africa's new leader on Thursday, while Mbeki's rival, Jacob Zuma, watched from the public gallery.

Zuma was not eligible for the Presidency because he is not a member of Parliament.

Motlanthe is seen as a caretaker leader until general electionsnext year, when Zuma is expected to become a legislator, then be chosen by Parliament as President.
