A Johannesburg metro police officer has been arrested for allegedly being part of a vehicle theft syndicate, a spokesperson said on Friday.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the 39-year-old man was arrested late on Thursday afternoon at the metro police's Johannesburg headquarters.
"The syndicate allegedly acquired cars under fraudulent circumstances and would take them... to neighbouring countries," said Minnaar.
The officer would face criminal charges and could be dismissed if found guilty.
He was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
"Corrupt officers should never be in the metro department," said Minnaar.
